Carey was once a popular fashion model. She is 5'10" tall and was sought-after by the top American designers, such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and others. In 1979, the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists named her dad Scientist of The Year. Her father was a scientist who travelled around the world as part of his profession. Following her graduation from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she began modeling on the side. This caught the eye of a Ford Model Agency New York. She moved to France in the year 1980, and lived briefly in Paris and Bordeaux before deciding to return home to New York to continue with her college education and modeling career. Soon, she was being featured on the cover of Vogue, Glamour, etc. While she was modeling, she was also a full-time student, completing a master's degree in literary studies at New York University. She became more interested in acting and started training with the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York. In 1986, she made her debut in acting with a minor role as a minor character in "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams. She spends her free time skiing, white-water rafting, wind-surfing and climbing rocks.
